I’ve been sober for 10 years. Here’s how I did it.

Hi, I’m Matt Brown. For 18 years, I battled addiction. Over the past decade, my journey through addiction recovery has been life-changing. I’ve learned that recovery is about more than just staying sober — it’s about embracing a new way of living. Here are some key insights that have helped me transform my life.

First, I realized the importance of a strong support network while in treatment at Belle Grove Springs, an Addiction Recovery Care (ARC) residential treatment center for men. Surrounding myself with positive influences and seeking out like-minded individuals who understand my struggles has been crucial. Whether it’s friends, family, or support groups, having people who believe in you makes all the difference.

Second, self-compassion is essential. Addiction often produces a heavy burden of guilt and shame. Learning to forgive myself and focus on progress rather than perfection has been a game-changer. Every small step forward is a victory.

Third, I discovered the power of healthy routines. Regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and prayer/meditation have been instrumental in maintaining my mental and physical well-being. These habits keep me centered, grounded, and resilient.

Finally, I found purpose in helping others during my internship at ARC. Sharing my story and offering support to those who are on their own recovery journeys gives me a profound sense of fulfillment. It reminds me that we are all capable of change and growth.

Recovery is a continuous journey, and I’ve learned to cherish every moment of it. If you’re struggling, remember that it’s never too late to seek help and start your own path to recovery.
