National Opioid Awareness Day: Understanding the Crisis and Finding Help

Each year on September 21st, National Opioid Awareness Day reminds us of the devastating impact opioids have on individuals, families, and communities across Kentucky and the United States. It’s a day to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and highlight the importance of prevention, treatment, and recovery.

The Numbers Behind the Crisis
Opioid-involved overdoses continue to affect tens of thousands of Americans every year. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows more than 75% of all overdoses involve some type of opioid.

Key Numbers:

  • The number of opioid overdose deaths in 2023 was almost 10 times higher than in 1999.
  • Good news: the opioid overdose death rate declined 4% from 2022 to 2023, the first annual decrease since 2018.
  • In the past 25 years, the epidemic has occurred in three distinct waves, each driven by different types of opioids.

Despite some progress, opioid-involved deaths remain high, showing the urgent need for increased education, prevention, and access to treatment.

Why Awareness Matters
Understanding the signs of opioid misuse, knowing how to respond to overdoses, and learning about treatment options are crucial steps toward saving lives. Communities that provide overdose prevention resources, access to care, and education can help turn the tide of this ongoing crisis.
