Karen’s Place Maternity Center, a residential drug and alcohol treatment center for pregnant women, announced it is accepting new clients today. The sixteen (16) bed center will provide opioid detoxification, stabilization, and residential treatment services for women with substance use disorders, and will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Karen’s Place Maternity Center is operated by Addiction Recovery Care, based in Louisa, Kentucky.
“Kentucky had over 1,400 babies born with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) in 2014, the latest year data is publicly available,” said Tim Robinson, CEO of Addiction Recovery Care. “Babies born with NAS are born into agony, suffering from withdrawal symptoms and requiring specialized intensive neonatal care. Karen’s Place Maternity Center is designed to be an early intervention for pregnant drug users to receive treatment for their addiction and give birth to a healthy baby.”
Clients will have the opportunity to receive residential treatment through their baby’s delivery and up to three months post delivery, while learning neonatal care skills. Baby and mom live together at the facility, giving mothers in recovery an opportunity to develop the critical early bond with their baby.
Karen’s Place Maternity Center is a Kentucky-licensed residential Alcohol or Other Drug Entity (AODE) and Behavioral Health Services Organization (BHSO) facility. Addiction Recovery Care currently operates six other residential substance abuse treatment facilities in Kentucky, three for men and three for women, and is nationally accredited for residential addiction treatment by CARF.
Karen’s Place Maternity Center will provide clients with over twenty (20) hours of clinical programming weekly, with counseling provided by licensed counselors and peer support groups led by state-certified peer support specialists. State-certified case managers will work with each client to improve their recovery environment by addressing family, educational, housing, and vocational needs. Medical care will be provided at Karen’s Place Maternity Center, with each client seeing a nurse practitioner weekly for their general medical needs. Karen’s Place Maternity Center medical staff is supervised by an American Board of Addiction Medicine certified physician.
The program’s treating obstetricians are Dr. Thomas Mahoney, Dr. Tony Dotson and Dr. James Frederick with King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. They are working in partnership with Dr. Agatha Critchfield and Dr. John O’Brien, through the University of Kentucky Medical Center’s Blue Angels program for high risk obstetric care.
Karen’s Place Maternity Center is located in Louisa, on Windy Hill Drive. The center shares its name with Karen’s Place, Addiction Recovery Care’s residential treatment facility for women. Both centers are named in memory of Karen Byrd, a Huntington, West Virginia woman, who was in recovery when she was shot and killed in 2004 by a 14 year-old drug dealer attempting to recover a debt. Karen’s parents, Raymond and Bernadine Byrd, attended the shooter’s trial and requested leniency. Because of their courage, forgiveness, and Christian character, the judge granted Karen’s shooter leniency and later in life he’ll be eligible for parole. They handed the teenager who took their daughter’s life a Bible, directing him to hope for his future even as he spends the next several years of his life behind bars.
